Background:
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced funding for the 2023 Pool Safely Grant Program to provide prevention education and enforcement of pool safety regulations. The due date for applications was April 30, 2023.
Drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 1-4. Florida leads the nation in this age group. Twenty-three (23) Seminole County children were lost to drowning in the past four years; three children died due to drowning in 2023. The Seminole County Community Health Office is partnering with the Seminole County Fire Department and the Gunner Martin Foundation to seek grant funding to increase community awareness of water safety and provide survival swim lessons for children 6 months to 6 years of age. The grant funds will provide training for staff in code enforcement, paramedicine and Community Health as well as pool safety alarms, education materials and community outreach and education. A minimum of 25% will be expended on enforcement activities and up to 75% may be used for education activities. The grant does not require matching funds and will be appropriated upon award.
