Background:
To meet the long-term water demands while protecting our drinking water source, the Upper Floridan Aquifer (UFA), the county must identify Alternative Water Supplies (AWS) to sustain the UFA. An exploratory well on the Yankee Lake property had been identified as a viable pilot project by staff and more recently by the St Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) to test the feasibility and cost/benefit of an Aquifer Recharge Well and an Aquifer Storage and Recovery Well, using river water treated through the Yankee Lake Surface Water Treatment Plant (SWTP). The SWTP is currently used to augment the county's reclaimed water in the Northeast Service Area and could potentially be used to treat excess water during the wet season that could be used to recharge the UFA in order to sustain the drinking water source. SJRWMD staff deems this project of regional significance.
SJRWMD FY25 Cost Share grant requires 100% matching funds for the project. The $5 million project will be included in the FY25 Budget for Seminole County. The grant application due date is 2/16/2024. Ratification of the application ensures Board support of the project.
