Background:

FDEP has awarded Seminole County a new Innovative Technology Grant for the Lake Jesup Passive Nutrient Reduction Pilot Project, designed to reduce external phosphorus concentrations that reach Lake Jesup.  Salt Creek is a stormwater canal with high phosphorus levels that discharges directly into Lake Jesup. The Lake has been identified as impaired for nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) by FDEP. This grant funded project includes installing an innovative phosphorus absorbing filter media in Salt Creek, which will absorb and sequester phosphorus from the creek water as it passes through the filter media, as well as analyzing the associated water quality results to determine the effectiveness of this technology.

BAR 26-037 in the amount of $415,600 will appropriate funding for this project.  There is no funding match (cost share) requirement from the County. The term of the grant is from execution through 10/30/2029.

Requested Action:

Staff requests the Board approve and authorize the County Manager to execute a grant contract with FDEP for the Lake Jesup Passive Nutrient Reduction Pilot Project; and authorize the Chairman to execute a Budget Amendment Request (BAR) 26-037 in the amount of $415,600 through the Environmental Services Grant Fund to appropriate the grant funding for this project.
