Background:
The U.S. Department of Transportation has released its FY25 Safe Streets and Roads for All grant funding, which allows for implementation grants that follow the MetroPlan Vision Zero Action Plan. An implementation grant can request up to $10 million of Federal funding with a local match of 20%. Seminole County’s application will emphasize it as one of the leading maintenance agencies in the State and has an excellent partnering relationship with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
Seminole County’s application will be used for upgrading all traffic signals in Seminole County with the latest technology to improve safety throughout the County to reduce accidents. Seminole County’s infrastructure has served as a testbed for numerous Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology deployments over the years. Seminole County also has the knowledge and expertise to manage a large-scale equipment deployment project. In addition to our own signals, we maintain all FDOT, City, School Board, and private signals in the County, creating a border-free environment with no jurisdictional complications.
The grant funding will purchase and install Connected Vehicle Roadside Units (RSUs), Intersection Movement Cameras (IMCs), CCTV Cameras, and Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs) for all intersections in Seminole County. Traffic Engineering has worked diligently over the past several years to add this equipment to their signals, and they are roughly 25%- 35% of the way to fully equipping them. This grant, if awarded, will seek to fill the gap to full deployment.
