Background:

The State of Florida Department of Transportation is providing grant funding for trail design and construction projects throughout the State.  The proposed improvements to the Flagler Trail, an unpaved “Signature Trail” approximately 16 miles long, on the eastern side of the County, consists of the planning, design, and construction of gaps in the existing Flagler Trail as well as providing a continuous paved trail surface. The improvements will provide a connection of the Sun Trail system from Orange County to Volusia County through the Seminole County portion of the Florida Wildlife Corridor. Coordination efforts with both Volusia and Orange County have been established to ensure connections points of the trail with both counties.

The existing Flagler Trail begins in the northeast section of Seminole County at the Lake Harney Wilderness Area in Geneva ending at Lake Mills Park in Chuluota. The anticipated planning and design cost to extend the trail from Volusia County to Orange County are estimated to be $1,900,000 with a construction cost of $8,000,000.  There is no match requirement for this grant.
