Background:

The Wekiva River, together with Wekiwa Springs Run, Rock Springs Run, and Black Water Creek, was designated by the United States Congress as a National Wild and Scenic River in October 2000. As part of this federal designation, the Wekiva Wild and Scenic River Advisory Committee was established to guide the long-term protection and management of the river system. The Advisory Committee is responsible for implementing the river system’s Comprehensive Management Plan, which prioritizes the preservation of habitat quality and ecosystem connectivity throughout the Wekiva watershed, with particular emphasis on the Florida black bear. Implementation of the plan is carried out through education, on-the-ground projects, and funded initiatives that support resource protection. Seminole County intends to submit a funding request to the Advisory Committee seeking support for the purchase of bear-proof trash cans within the Wekiva watershed. There is no match requirement, and the request is scheduled for consideration at the committee’s July 15 meeting. If awarded, the funds will be administered and distributed using the same processes and criteria established for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation. Commission (FWC) bear-resistant container program, ensuring consistency, accountability, and efficient implementation across all funding sources.
