Background:
The VA released a NOFO to reduce Veteran suicide by directly providing or coordinating the provision of suicide prevention services to eligible individuals and their families. Community Health seeks to collaborate with veteran serving community partners, including the Veteran’s Advisory Council, behavioral health organizations, local VFWs and other similar organizations, to reduce veteran suicide. Veterans who have a lifetime history of suicide attempts or preparatory behaviors for suicide, a recent hospitalization for suicidality, recent suicidal thoughts, or significant presence of psychosocial risk factors will be prioritized. Eligible veteran participants will be referred from any veteran serving community organization and identified via Veteran and Community Health outreaches.
If awarded, Seminole County will receive funding through the VA SSG Fox SPGP to expand and enhance suicide prevention services for veterans and eligible service members. The grant award amount is up to $750,000 and there is no match requirement. The initiative will implement a coordinated, community-based approach that extends beyond clinical settings, emphasizing early identification, risk screening, care coordination, and peer and family engagement. By integrating mental health support with services that address social determinants such as housing, financial stability, and access to care, the program will strengthen collaboration across local providers and improve continuity of care. This effort will enhance the County’s capacity to address gaps in veteran-focused suicide prevention services and improve overall mental health outcomes and well-being.
