Background:

A 3,000 square-foot area near the newly constructed Lake Lily stormwater pond is proposed for conversion from a traditional Bahia grass landscaped area to a sustainable landscaped demonstration area. The converted landscape area will support the County’s Holistic Water Policy and Florida Friendly Landscaping guidelines and will provide residents an opportunity to see traditional turf grass landscape alternatives first-hand. Vegetation will also include littoral aquatic plantings around the pond in selected locations, a small grouping of trees to provide habitat structure, and a small upland sustainable garden located adjacent to the sidewalk on Senator Lane. Lake Lily is a focal point of the County’s 5 Points area, and therefore, is a prime location for this initial demonstration area.

The total estimated cost for both the upland sustainable landscaping demonstration area and the littoral plantings is $40,000. The budget for this item will be transferred from existing Watershed Management funds currently allocated to Countywide shoreline restorations and Water Conservation educational funds.

A map of the site and proposed location is attached.
